PHC Worldwide Technical Team

DR. DONALD H. MARX
Chief Scientist
Few companies other than Plant Health Care, Inc. can offer access to scientists of Dr. Marx’s caliber. Dr. Marx spends the majority of his time working with Plant Health Care, Inc.'s horticulture, agricultural, arboricultural, forestry, and land reclamation customers. He also manages the university and field testing of Plant Health Care, Inc. products. Dr. Marx lectures extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad on plant physiology, mycorrhizae and bacteria. The esteemed winner of the Marcus Wallenberg Prize for Forestry (awarded by the King of Sweden), Dr. Marx is the leading authority on mycorrhizae and their practical application to plants. During his 37 years of service with the USDA Forest Service, he conducted extensive research on the practical use of mycorrhizal fungi to improve forests worldwide, as well as work in air pollution, stress relationships in trees, use of organic soil amendments in reclamation, exotic tropical forestry and nursery management. Dr. Marx founded the Institute for Mycorrhizal Research and Development in 1975 and the Institute of Tree Root Biology in 1990 for the Forest Service. He has authored more than 270 scientific papers in forest microbiology and has presented more than 400 invitational lectures in 28 countries, as well as at most major universities in the U.S.

DR. C. EDWARD CORDELL
Vice President, Technical Services,
Land Restoration and Forestry Division

Like Dr. Marx, Dr. Cordell also spends the majority of his time working one-on-one with Plant Health Care, Inc. customers in the forestry and land reclamation industries. He also manages the MycorTree™ seedling production operation with designated contract growers. Dr. Cordell is considered the leading authority in the technology transfer and practical application of ectomycorrhizae in forest tree nurseries, field restoration, Christmas tree production, mineland reclamation and other related forest tree uses. He has received numerous awards for his accomplishments in forest pathology and ectomycorrhizal fungi applications, including the USDA Forest Service Certificate of Merit Award (1982, 1990 and 1991). Dr. Cordell is formerly the National Mycorrhizal Coordinator and Nursery Specialist, USDA Forest Service. He has authored more than 100 scientific papers and lectured throughout the U.S. and abroad.

DR. STEPHEN B. MAUL
Vice President, Research & Development

Dr. Maul has an extensive and distinguished background in the management of commercial microbial product research and development programs. At Plant Health Care, Inc., he ensures that the Company’s products are fully developed before they reach the hands of the customers. He encourages customers to contact him with any suggestions relating to Plant Health Care, Inc. products. Dr. Maul was founder and President of Mycorr Tech, Inc., which developed the process that is used to produce Plant Health Care, Inc.’s ectomycorrhizal inoculum products. Prior to founding Mycorr, he was vice president, member of the board of directors and director of research for Sylvan Spawn Laboratory, Pittsburgh. Dr. Maul held positions as manager of bioengineering at Schering Plough Corp. and was a senior scientist at Eli Lilly.

DR. MICHAEL J. KERNAN
Technical Services

Dr. Kernan is a valuable member of the Plant Health Care, Inc. Technical Support Services team, providing technical information about Plant Health Care, Inc. products to customers to ensure their proper use and best results. In addition, Dr. Kernan is responsible for the production of all ectomycorrhizal fungi inoculum and maintenance of rigid quality control standards. He is also responsible for maintaining Plant Health Care, Inc.’s culture collections of ectomycorrhizal fungi (one of the world’s largest). The Ben Franklin Ericoid Project, a research grant program established to develop an ericoid mycorrhizal fungi inoculum, is also coordinated by Dr. Kernan. Prior to his position with Plant Health Care, Inc., Dr. Kernan served as Production Manager for Mycorr Tech, Inc., as technical writer at SKC, Inc.and with the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Hazardous Materials Research. He received his B.A. in Biology from St. Vincent College and his Ph.D. in Biology from St. Bonaventure University, where he described an ericoid mycorrhizal discomycete (a new fungal species).

DR. JOSEPH STRAUSS
Technical Services, Europe

Dr. Joseph Strauss is in charge of technical services for continental Europe. As a key scientist for both the Plant Health Care and Environmental Health Care business divisions, he provides technology support to the Company’s European distributors and operations. Dr. Strauss also works on the development of new technologies for application in microbial ecology and manages quality control of biotechnological processes and pathogen analysis.

From 1995 to 1999, Dr. Strauss lectured and taught Biochemistry (basic through advanced) at the Technical University of Vienna. At present, Dr. Strauss lectures at the University of Vienna, Institute for Ecology on “Molecular Identification in Microbial Ecology” and at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna on “Microbial Molecular Genetics.” He is the author of more than 20 international, peer-reviewed publications that have appeared in the highest-ranking journals of Molecular Biology and Genetics.

Dr. Strauss received his B.S. degree in Agronomy (cum laude) from Polythechnicum for Agriculture (HLBLA) Lower Austria, his M.S. degree from the Institute for Biochemical Technology and Microbiology at the Technical University of Vienna, and his Ph.D. from the Université Paris-Sud (cum laude). He has also been awarded several fellowships and research positions. Currently, he leads a research group in “Microbial Genetics” at the Center of Applied Genetics, University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna.
